Cuban citizens planning a trip to Dubai face a few practical realities that travellers from many other countries do not, from the lack of direct flights to payment restrictions that follow Cuban nationals abroad. Getting these details sorted alongside your Dubai visa application makes the difference between a smooth trip and one full of last-minute surprises.
There are no direct flights between Havana's Jose Marti International Airport and Dubai. Most Cuban travellers connect through a major European or Gulf hub, with Turkish Airlines, Air France, and Qatar Airways among the most commonly used carriers on this route. The full journey, including the layover, typically runs well over 20 hours, so it is worth building in rest time before continuing on to your Dubai visa activities. Dubai is eight hours ahead of Havana, which is useful to know when timing airport pickups or hotel check-ins on arrival.
This is one of the most important practical points for Cuban citizens travelling internationally. Cuban-issued bank cards generally do not work outside Cuba because of long-standing restrictions linked to the US embargo, which limits Cuban banks' access to international card networks. This means most Cuban travellers need to carry cash in a widely accepted currency, such as euros or US dollars, and exchange it for UAE dirhams (AED) after arriving in Dubai. Currency exchange counters are available at Dubai International Airport and throughout the city, so converting cash on arrival is usually straightforward once you're there.
The UAE has had diplomatic relations with Cuba since 2002, and the UAE Embassy in Havana has been open since October 2015. The embassy is located in the Cubanacan area of Playa, Havana, and can assist with consular matters for Cuban citizens dealing with UAE-related paperwork. Since Dubai visa applications are processed online through a licensed sponsor rather than in person, most applicants will not need to visit the embassy for the visa itself, but it remains a point of contact for other UAE-related consular needs.
