The Dubai visa for Bulgaria citizens works differently from most countries. Bulgarian passport holders: visa-free for up to 90 days
Bulgaria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that EU citizens with a valid ordinary passport are exempt from the UAE short-stay visa for up to 90 days in each 180-day period. This follows an agreement dated 6 May 2015. The UAE Embassy in Sofia describes the same benefit as a free multiple-entry visa on arrival, valid for six months, with a 90-day stay.
In practice, a Bulgarian citizen visiting Dubai for tourism, family or a short business trip does not need to pay for a tourist visa. If a website tells you that a Bulgarian passport holder must buy a visa for a short stay, compare it with the official guidance above before you pay.

Where you live and which passport you hold are different things. The exemption belongs to the passport, not to Bulgarian residence.

Bulgaria's foreign ministry lists several passport conditions that catch travelers out:
- The passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of travel.
- Entry is not allowed on a temporary passport, and the EU Emergency Travel Document is not yet recognised by the UAE.
- Passports with an incomplete date of birth ("00" or "XX" for the day, month or year) are refused.
- Passports with "X" as the gender marker are not accepted.

Dubai Tourist Visa from Bulgaria: Options if You Need One
Applicants who do need a visa can choose from these options:

- 7-day short and 14-day business visas: for brief trips and short business visits. Neither is a work permit.
- 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas: for passengers connecting through the UAE who want to leave the airport.

Dubai Visa Fees for Bulgaria Passport Holders
For short stays, Bulgarian citizens pay no UAE visa fee, according to the UAE Embassy in Sofia.
For other nationalities applying from Bulgaria, the price depends on passport nationality, visa type, stay length, entry type and processing speed. Documents for a Dubai Visa from Bulgaria
If you need a visa, prepare:
- A colour scan of the passport data page, valid for at least six months, with blank pages left
- A recent colour photo on a plain white background
- Flight details. Wait to buy a final ticket until the visa is approved
- Accommodation details, or your host's Emirates ID if you will stay with family or friends

Dubai Visa from Sofia: Flights and Planning
Sofia Airport is Bulgaria's capital airport. Flight-search listings show nonstop flydubai service between Sofia and Dubai, taking roughly five hours. Some listings also show other carriers or Dubai's Al Maktoum airport, and schedules change, so confirm the airline, the Dubai airport and the dates before booking. Dubai is one hour ahead of Bulgaria in summer time and two hours ahead in winter time.
Applicants who need a visa should avoid non-refundable fares until approval.

This is not a visa matter, but it affects planning. In its update dated 11 September 2026, Bulgaria's foreign ministry listed its highest risk level for the UAE, citing possible regional escalation and airspace closures. The US lists the UAE at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel". UAE airports and airlines were reported as operating in September 2026, but disruption can happen at short notice.

Bulgaria's foreign ministry advises carrying a parental power of attorney with UAE address details and a copy of the child's birth certificate when minors travel.
